As a leader in the Rutgers community we are asking for your support of the RU Political Action Committee (RU PAC). Why now?

  • The state of New Jersey provides 18% of the Rutgers operating budget. In absolute dollars, there has been no increase in funding, since the late 1980’s. Yet Rutgers student enrollment has grown by approximately 15,000.
  • The economic outlook for the state, after nine consecutive bond downgrades, is unstable.
  • Since Rutgers is a state university, the administration is limited in its lobbying efforts. This puts Rutgers at a disadvantage with other constituencies who are competing for a share of the state budget.
  • Rutgers now has over 250,000 alumni, 68,000 undergraduate and graduate students, 24,000 faculty and staff, and 50,000 continuing education students. This constituency will play a key role in the future of New Jersey and the RU PAC is dedicated to immediately making our voices heard.
  • Other comparable peer institutions have similar groups lobbying on their behalf to make sure their voice is heard. We must stay competitive in all respects.
  • Rutgers has excellent momentum and the time is NOW to amplify “R voices” in Trenton.

Why are we asking you to pledge your support by making a $5,000 contribution to be a Founding Member?

  • We seek to have the charter Board of the RU PAC consist of leaders of the Rutgers alumni community who are willing to make a substantial startup contribution.
  • You, or someone you know, were able to attend Rutgers because of support you received from the state of New Jersey and other generous donors.a
  • You can help future students by making sure “R voice” is heard by the New Jersey legislature, despite the increased demands of competing interests.
  • Based on your personal and professional experience, you know the importance of strong advocacy.
